Preparing for the Residency.

Funding your residency.

If you are applying for funding we are very happy to help by providing supporting documents.

It is important that you identify the appropriate fund and provide us with all the information that should be included in the support.

Over the last 6 years we have compiled a list of funding resources and opportunities.

Planning for your residency project.

To make the most of your time at PADA it can be useful to sketch out a rough plan for the residency period and to plan in advance the materials you may need.

Here are links to various art shops and other useful materials specialists. If you cant find what you need let us know and we can help.

We have good workshops for the production of artworks, stretchers and painting panels but artists will be responsible for purchasing materials.

  • There are a variety of shops close to PADA that provide a range of materials:

    • Papelaria Universal: Art shop 2 minutes walk stocking a great range of student/artist quality materials. They offer 10% discount to PADA artists. Mention PADA at the checkout.

    • Marcontin: Industrial paint supplier around the corner from the studio.

    • Best Buy: A wide range of basic quality goods, great for quantity and cheap materials. You can find a huge range of equipment, hardware and some art materials.

    • Barão e Costa: Builders merchants stocking a great range of tools and building materials.

    Lisbon based art shops:

    • Pontes Das Artes: High quality arts store in Lisbon city center.

    Camera tripod

    Epson Projector

    Sewing Machine

    Generator

  • Around the studios there are various fabricators and technicians that can be hired to assist with projects that we cannot accommodate at PADA.

    • Fidel Évora: Screen printing studio.

    • Onda Brinde: A Variety of printing services.

    • MultiAço: Metal workers

    • Rita Zorro: Local ceramics studio.

  • If you are ordering materials from abroad, please send it to your name with your phone number so we know it belongs to you.

The address and postcode are on our website.

Please let us know when the package will arrive to make sure somebody is at the studios. If nobody is available to receive the package it is possible a slip will be left for collection at the local post office.

In addition, if the package is arriving from outside the EU you will need to pay import duties, so make sure to check the shipping website for more information. It is best if you pay them online, before the package arrives. We cannot take the package unless the import duties are paid.

  • When ordering materials from within Portugal, make sure to check when the delivery is expected.

When ordering online, companies often request a NIF number, this is a Portuguese tax number. You can enter 514900490 (PADA´s tax number).

  • There is a lot of material to be salvaged within the industrial park, we will introduce you to the best places to find these materials. It is important to check with us before bringing anything back to the studio for safety and to maintain relations within the industrial park.

Travelling and getting to PADA.

When booking your flight and planning your journey please take into consideration the arrival time and your check in time at PADA. Due to our tight residency schedule it is often difficult to accommodate early check-in as well late check outs.

Once your journey details are confirmed, please send us your flight details so we can plan arrival times.

Check-in starts from 2pm on the day of arrivals.

more info:

  • We have a tight turnaround between residencies but sometimes there is a possibility that there is availability within the accommodation to arrive a day earlier or stay a day later.

We are happy to provide this service if it provides flexibility around flight times.
You have to book this service well in advance.

Each extra night is charged at €40 paid on arrival.

  • Uber/Bolt (approx. €40, 35mins)

Make sure to have the app downloaded before arriving.

Walk right out of the arrivals gate, up the escalators and outside.

Ubers generally pick up from the departures entrance.

The Uber will pull up in the short term parking area directly across from the airport.

  • Public Transport (approx. €8, 2 hours)

Walk right as you're leaving the arrivals gate.

The metro stop is outside, down a flight of stairs.

At the ticket machines buy a single trip (€1.50). The ticket costs €0.50 and it is rechargeable.

A zapping card is a rechargeable ticket and can be used on the metro and ferry. This is an alternative to buying singles and will undoubtedly come in handy later in the month.

Take the red line away from the airport.

Change platforms at Sao Sebastiao, taking the blue line towards Santa Apolonia.

Get off at Terreiro De Paço which is the ferry terminal.

Buy a single trip (€2.50) at the ferry ticket machines. (unless you opted for a zapping card).

We recommend getting an Uber/Bolt from the Barreiro ferry terminal to PADA for ease and it’s relatively cheap (€4).

Arrivals start at 2pm on the first day of the residency.

It is best to arrive at the studios and then we can take you to the accommodation. Address and directions are on the information pack. Times will be arranged with each artist closer to the start.

As covered in the contract sent previously, we take a refundable security deposit on arrival of €150. This can be paid in cash. We will accept the equivalent in your local currency in order to cut down on transfer fees.

The plans for the first day are the following:
