Welcome to PADA Winter Residency
Residency Programme.
Activities and Programme
The residency is primarily self led and artists are expected to be self sufficient in their practice.
The activities in the residency programme are designed to introduce artists to the area, to the Lisbon art scene and to encourage dialogue between those in residence.
Artists are expected to be respectful to each other and make the most of the open studio environment to share knowledge and discuss the varying practices within the residency group.
Support and Network
We believe dialogue is important for a rich studio practice, and the residency programme has been developed with this in mind.
Artists-in-residence will be sharing the studios, accommodation and life at PADA together.
We believe the success of each residency period is a direct result of the generosity, commitment and dedication shown by those in residency alongside that of the PADA team.
PADA is an artist led project and grows with each and every artist that visits.

Studio, materials and equipments.
The studios are located in a spacious 1000 m² converted warehouse.
Divided into two floors with a mezzanine overlooking the residency studios, the warehouse is home to PADA Gallery and all residency facilities.
Located on the ground floor are the 10 Residency Studios (each with 35m²), the workshop and the designated gallery space. On the first floor there is a large living area, communal kitchen and a small library. You can find PADA´s team in the office by the stairs.
There is 24hr access to the studios but staff are usually only around Monday to Friday 10-5pm.
Artists are expected to be respectful to each other and make the most of the open studio environment, to share skills and knowledge within a new network.
Noise from fabrication processes should be expected, but please be considerate and anything extremely noisy please confine to the workshop or if possible outside.

Calendar of Events.
Workshop and technical support.
PADA provides a workshop for residents to use with a variety of hand tools, power tools and specialist equipment.
An induction is necessary before using the workshop as well as signing an agreement of correct usage. Power tools can cause serious injuries and it is important to be careful and to use the workshop correctly and responsibly.
All tools are free to use but expendables such as screws, sandpaper, wall plugs etc. are the responsibility of the artist. Similarly drill bits, jigsaw blades and other items that wear are the responsibility of the artist.
There is always a lot of leftovers and usually a wide range of the power tool accessories but it cannot be relied upon. There are several shops close by that sell all these items.
Extra assistance in the workshop or fabrication services are charged at €15/hr and needs to be booked in advance.

Our photographer and filmmaker will document each artist in the studio. A short film of each artist will be produced to be shared across social media and our youtube channel.
Each artist will be asked to prepare a few sentences that they will record to accompany the film.
At the end of the residency artists will have access to a google drive sharing the exhibition documentation (photos) as well as their individual videos.
Extra photo and/or video documentation can be arranged for a supplementary fee.

Industrial Park.
PADA is located within the old Companhia União Fabril (CUF) industrial park in Barreiro.
From 1875 until the company was nationalised, as a result of the Carnation revolution in 1974, CUF was the largest corporation in Portugal, exporting products worldwide. Under the control of the industrialist Alfredo da Silva, CUF utilised resources from throughout the Portuguese colonies producing a diverse range of goods from petrochemicals to carpets.
From the 1980’s the company slipped into decline and is now largely abandoned. Under the management of Baia do Tejo the area is slowly redefining itself.
PADA have access to restricted areas where the old brutalist remains of the CUF empire stand. Crumbling concrete structures, vast empty warehouses and the alien landscapes of the now decontaminated pyrite fields.
The Industrial Park is home to 3 museums that document the fascinating history of the area and PADA are working with the historians and curators of these spaces to give artists access to the archives in order to bring a new audience to the history of CUF.
