PADA + Turps Banana Residency

This Autumn Turps Banana and PADA are collaborating again to offer artistic residencies.

A unique programme developed for painters interested in experiencing PADA Residency Programme with mentorship support from Turps Banana.

Info

Artists-in-residence will benefit from a structured mentoring provided by Turps Banana alongside a supplementary programme organised by PADA.  At the end of the month there will be a crit hosted by a Turps mentor and resident artists are invited to exhibit the work produced whilst at PADA in the onsite gallery space. 

  • Mentoring will be led by Phil King (Co-Editor of Turps Painting Magazine and Turps correspondence Course Mentor) and include visiting artists and mentors from London and Lisbon.  Tim Ralston, director of PADA and Turps Banana alumni will be leading the programme. 

  • The residency programme is focused in building a group dynamic amongst the 6 artists-in-residence in order to develop dialogue and exchange of knowledge, whilst actively supporting each artists practice independently.

  • Dates Artists are invited to stay for 1 or 2 months in the following dates:

    — September  (1 - 28th September)

    — October       (3rd - 30th October)

  • Cost of the residency is £1700 per month.
    This includes access to all facilities (accommodation, studios, etc) and all activities and mentoring of the programme. It does not include flights, meals and materials.

How to Apply

All applicants should fill in the application form with the following information is required:

  • Personal Details Name, email, website, instagram, address, phone number & nationality

  • Cover letter A brief introduction to yourself , where you heard about PADA and describing your reasons for applying to the Residency.

  • Preferred dates and duration of stay (1 or 2 months)

  • Practice statement (max. 250 words) Describe your practice/research and areas of interest

  • Project proposal (max. 250 words) Outline your residency project, motivation & expectations

  • Sustainability statement. A few sentences how your project will minimise its impact on the environment

  • Portfolio (5 -10 images) include dimensions, technique, title and date in the image tittle

  • CV

Application Deadline: 15th April 2022. Artists will be informed if they have been successful on the 5th May 2022.

Programme

We believe dialogue and knowledge exchange is important for a rich studio practice, and the Residency Programme has been developed with this in mind. The monthly activities organised are varied and focused in enriching the residency experience.

Arrival

  • On arrival PADA will provide orientation to get the artists settled into their accommodation and studios as well as familiarised with their surroundings.

  • Artists will be given a tour of the industrial park, the old factories as well as all the current facilities. 

  • An introduction of the local industrial history by be presented by the local historian focusing on the Industrial Museum of Baía do Tejo.

  • Turps Banana mentor Phil King will introduce the programme to the artists. 

Visits

PADA will host a tour of independent galleries and/or artist led spaces in Lisbon.

Exhibition

Artists will work towards a group show that Pada will help arrange within the purpose built gallery space.
The exhibition will be jointly curated by Turps Banana and PADA.

Mentoring days

There will be 3 periods of mentoring:

  • At the end of the second week there will be one to one tutorials in the studios with Phil King. 

  • In the 3rd week a guest mentor will fly in for 1-2-1 tutorials.

  • In the 4th week there will be a group critique before the exhibition with Phil King and Tim Ralston. 

    Artists are encouraged to initiate peer to peer mentoring as well as organising other events and visits with local artists.

Guest Artist and Curators

PADA will invite artists, curators and galleries from Lisbon to talk to the artists during their stay. 

Facilities

PADA Studios

PADA Studios is a spacious 1000 m² converted warehouse located in the center of Baia do Tejo Industrial Park. Divided into two floors with a mezzanine overlooking the residency studios, the warehouse is home to PADA Gallery and all residency facilities. There is Wi-Fi and residents have access to the studios 24/7.

Located on the ground floor is:

  • Open plan Residency Studios (each with 40m²)

  • Workshop for wood, metal, ceramics and dark room

  • PADA Gallery

On the first floor there is a large living area, communal kitchen and small library.

Accommodation

Artists-in-Residence will be accommodated 5 minutes walk from the studios in 2 separate cottages in the beautiful and quiet area of Bairro de Santa Barbara - the old workers village.

Each cottage has 3 private double bedrooms. There is a shared living room with washing machine, basic breakfast facilities and a bathroom.  Wi-Fi connection is available throughout the apartment.
